Sekszorg
Intimacy and sexuality are basic human needs, just like eating and sleeping. Yet these topics are often overlooked, even in healthcare. That’s unfortunate, because intimacy and physical touch have many health benefits. They can help lower blood pressure, support digestion, and relieve pain, stress, and anxiety.
Research from the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience has shown that people with physical or mental health challenges benefit even more from physical touch than healthy people. Even something as simple as holding hands or placing an arm around someone’s shoulder can already have a positive effect.
Not all clients in healthcare have the relationships or skills that allow them to meet their needs for intimacy and sexuality. In such cases, sekszorg can be provided. We begin with an intake session to determine the support goals. Through collaboration with the client’s care team, we can create an approach that fits within their treatment plan.
Support goals
Sexual support may focus solely on cuddling or sexual contact, but it can also involve working on themes such as:
-
Learning to set boundaries
-
Body acceptance
-
Learning to relax and enjoy
-
Techniques and tools for masturbation
-
Fears or insecurities around intimacy
-
Recognizing social cues during sex
Education
As a sekszorg provider, I can offer one-on-one support for clients, but I also provide education sessions to groups. For example, I’ve given sex education sessions to residential living groups and guest lectures at healthcare colleges about the importance of intimacy and sexuality.
